Ultras are planning to attack referee during Spain match, warn Croatian police

Further crowd disturbances expected

The French authorities have been issued a warning over more crowd trouble during Croatia’s Euro 2016 clash against Spain on Tuesday night.

A group of Croatian ultras disrupted last Friday’s game against the Czech Republic by throwing flares onto the field. Croatia were on their way to scoring a 2-1 win when the incident happened with one flare exploding in the face of a steward who was trying to clear the pitch.

Croatia were fined £75,000 and may very well have dropped two points over the incident. The players pleaded for calm from their supporters while play was stopped before conceding a penalty in added time, which was converted by Tomas Necid.

French authorities have been alerted of another demonstration from the Croatian ultras during the Spain game, reports Goal.com.

The group are planning an attack on referee Bjorn Kuijpers, according to president of the Croatian Police Union, Nikola Kajkic.

“We have information that the same people that caused trouble in St. Etienne will try the same, and even try to attack the referee in 30th minute of the match.”

“All info we received ahead of Czech match proved to be right and as this time, we passed all info to French police.”

It comes after an image emerged on Reddit purporting to show a map of the ground in St Etienne annotated by Croatian ultras before the game.

The image went up on a Croatian Facebook page prior to kick off and foreshadowed the trouble during the game.

Croatian legend Slaven Bilic, who is a popular pundit on ITV’s Euro 2016 coverage, was brutally honest about the crowd trouble which is yet another black mark in a succession of shameful controversies marring his country’s game.
