Twitter launch Manchester Bee emoji ahead of preseason game between United and City

The two clubs are set to meet in Houston on Thursday

A special worker bee emoji will be available on Twitter ahead of the preseason meeting between Manchester United and Manchester City.

The two clubs are both touring the United States as they prepare for the new season and are set to meet in a friendly match in Houston on Thursday.

The worker bee has long been associated with Manchester, adopted as an emblem for the city during the industrial revolution. However, following the recent bombing of the Manchester Arena – in which 22 people were killed – the worker bee has also been used as a symbol of the city’s strength and solidarity.

The match in Houston will be the first meeting between Manchester’s two football clubs since the attack. Already, it’s been announced that worker bee images will be featured on the shirts of both teams during the game.

As well as this, Twitter have announced that anyone using the hashtags #ManchesterDerby or #ACityUnited will automatically trigger the worker bee emoji.
