Toby Alderweireld divides opinion with hottest take on GOAT debate

Is he off to Manchester United then?

Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi?

Oh wait, who’s that elbowing his way into the GOAT argument with the hottest take of all? Why, it’s only Spurs centre-half Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld may have let the fact that Belgium have one foot in the knockout stages of the World Cup cloud his judgement as the defender apparently proclaimed his international compatriot Romelu Lukaku the greatest of all time. That’s greatest of all time… Not just the most in-form centre-forward in Europe or the striker with an incredible international record. No, no. If you ask Alderweireld, Lukaku is the greatest of all time.

Wow!

On Saturday afternoon, Lukaku became Belgium’s top scorer at major tournaments by scoring his seventh goal for his country at a major competition, adding two to his World Cup tally in his side’s 5-2 victory over Tunisia.

The 25-year-old can’t stop finding the net for his national team and there’s no denying his quality in front of goal but most would agree that he has some ways to go before he finds himself in the GOAT debate.

Only seven months ago, Alderweireld threw club teammate Harry Kane’s name into the argument but, with uncertainty growing over his future at Spurs, it sounds like the defender has changed his tune.

Alderweireld has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer and while nothing will be decided before Belgium’s involvement in the World Cup comes to an end, supporters felt that the centre-back’s tweet was an attempt from him to force a move to Old Trafford.
