This ‘Wexit’ banner from Arsenal fans is why we can’t have nice things

Check yourself before you Wexit yourself

There are some things in football which it would be impossible to explain to anyone who doesn’t follow the sport.

Then there are things like this, which are impossible to explain even to people who have been watching the game for years.

Arsenal fans launched a ‘Wenger out’ protest ahead of the FA Cup quarter-final against Lincoln City, calling for their hugely successful manager to stand down after 20 years at the helm.

However, as we’re sure you know, that wasn’t the weird part.

One of the supporters brought along a sign bearing the word ‘Wexit’. No context. No other words. Just ‘Wexit’. In massive letters. On a banner so big it needs two people to hold it upright.

Imagine being that man’s son, going back into school on Monday.

“Good weekend?”

“Yeah it was alright”

“Go to the game?”

“Nah, just walked around with dad holding a Wexit banner. Much more fun.”

“Wexit?”

“Yeah”

“Like…Wenger exit?”

“Exactly”

“We’ve spoken about this”

“…”

“Wait, more fun? He told you to say that, didn’t he?”

“…”

“We’re not friends any more.”

The phrase “Brexit means Brexit” is bad enough, what with ‘Brexit’ not actuallly being a word, but ‘Wexit’? What does that mean? And don’t say “Wexit means Wexit”.

If there was ever an argument for Wenger getting another 20 years at Arsenal, surely this is it. The only saving grace is that it helped distract us from this monstrosity at Bournemouth v West Ham.
