We’ve seen some close calls over the years but the ground on which Arsene Wenger stands genuinely looks shakier than ever.
Fresh from Arsenal’s crushing defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, Wenger’s future is in legitimate jeopardy ahead of the club’s plan to review the manager’s position at the end of this season.
Unless the Gunners win the Europa League this year, which will be easier said than done considering their Round of 16 opposition, the 2017/18 campaign will be deemed an absolute failure.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright sees no reason for his former club to keep a hold of Wenger, with the North London side struggling to trouble the top four this season.
“Whether he stays at the end of this season, I could not make a case,” Wright BBC Radio 5 live. “I am not sure anyone can. This development of mediocrity has to be arrested.”
And, according to several reports, Arsenal have drawn up a shortlist of potential candidates to replace Wenger if they part ways with the Frenchman after a 22-year association.
The Telegraph reports that Brendan Rodgers is in the frame to take over at the Emirates, after impressing since moving to Celtic two years ago.
Former players Thierry Henry and Mikel Arteta are also up for consideration, although if experience is what Arsenal are after then they may look to Carlo Ancelotti or Joachim Low.
If the club decides to appoint a promising, young manager to guide the Gunners to future success then Monaco’s Leonardo Jardim or Shakhtar Donetsk’s Paulo Fonseca are understood to be in the running.
