The clubs with the most players left at Euro 2016 proves football’s old order has changed

Some big surprises

Evan Fanning

These are momentous times, folks.

Iceland are in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.

Wales are in the semi-finals.

Leicester City are the current Premier League champions.

Years from now someone will probably produce a detailed paper which will explain exactly how these minnows managed to topple the supposedly older, wiser, richer aristocrats of European football.

It will detail the science and the socio-economic reasons behind these unlikely triumphs and it will be boring as hell.

So for now let’s just enjoy the fun of this topsy-turvy time.

And one thing that perfectly illustrates this seeming shift in the power base of European football is the list of clubs that still have players playing in France.

Only five countries remain at the Euros and of these amazingly  it is Crystal Palace who are second on the list in terms of club representation with five players still in the competition (Wayne Hennessey, Joe Ledley, Jonny Williams, new signing Steve Mandanda and Yohan Cabaye, in case you were wondering).

This is more than Real Madrid (4), Barcelona (1), Chelsea (0) and Manchester United (3).

Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Aberdeen both have the same involvement in the tournament as Barcelona.

Bayern Munich are still the club with the most involvement in the tournament with eight players still in action, six of whom are in the Germany squad who progressed to the semi-final on Saturday night.

Here’s a selection of who’s still involved:

Bayern Munich 8

Crystal Palace 5

Arsenal 4

Juventus 4

Real Madrid 4

Sporting Lisbon 4

Swansea City 3

Manchester United 3

Liverpool 3

Leicester City 2

West Ham United 2

Paris Saint-Germain 1

Aberdeen 1

Inverness Caledonian Thistle 1

Gillingham 1

Chelsea 0
