Stevie G is raking it in

LA Galaxy supporters, we can’t say we’d fault you for scratching your heads at these new figures.

This week, the base salaries for players in MLS were released on MLSPlayers.org and the results raised a few eyebrows.

What struck us first, when we scrolled straight down to the Galaxy to see how much our beloved Robbie Keane was on, was that the striker only made 58% of what Steven Gerrard is raking in.

2012 MLS Cup - Houston Dynamo v Los Angeles Galaxy

Keane has been named the Galaxy’s MVP in each of the last four seasons while Gerrard has struggled, in all honesty, to adapt to life in the United States.

The Irish legend takes home $3,500,000 compared to the $6,000,000 base salary that Gerrard signed on for.

Keane is actually only 10th on the published list, with a number of unexpected names besting him in the earning stakes.

Houston Dynamo v Toronto FC

Sunderland flop Jozy Altidore makes $4,825,000 at Toronto FC while Clint Dempsey has a base salary of $3,913,008 and guaranteed compensation of $4,605,941.50.

Kaka is the top-earner with a base salary of $6,660,000, closely followed by Frank Lampard on $6,000,000.

Who can blame former Premier League stars for seeing out their final seasons Stateside with figures like these being thrown about?

With LA Galaxy a possible destination for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, next year’s figures might also make for interesting reading.
