West Ham United were 'weighing up' a move for the experienced, highly regarded defender Mats Hummels.
Hummels left Borussia Dortmund following the Champions League final, having not renewed his contract.
A former Germany international, he would have been an exciting addition to the top flight of English football.
Hummels was a player that the club were considering alongside the experienced John Egan and Joel Matip.
Egan was previously reportedly training with Championship outfit Burnley after leaving Sheffield United.
Matip, a former Premier League and Champions League winner, is without a club following the expiration of his Liverpool contract in May.
The Irons want to sign a fourth centre back after offloading two in the latter stages of the window.
Clubs are able to sign free agents outside of the transfer window, despite it closing on Friday night, if they have room in their 25-man squad.
This summer Hummels had been in talks with other clubs, including Real Sociedad.
Now, a medical is booked to sign for European elite Roma ahead of a potential one-year-deal.
