Aguero is leaving City, but perhaps staying in England
His time at Manchester City may well be coming to an end, but Sergio Aguero could reportedly prolong his stay in English football beyond the end of this season.
It was announced last week that the Argentine would be leaving City in the summer when his contract at the Etihad expired. While many have assumed his next destination will be overseas, with moves to Italy, Spain and back to his homeland all reported, it’s now been suggested Aguero’s desire to break Premier League scoring records may prompt him to remain in England.
A report in the Evening Standard names Chelsea as one of the clubs interested in Aguero, despite also eyeing a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
Sources close to the player have suggested the opportunity to move higher up the Premier League’s all-time scorers lists may be enough to see him reject the advances of Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Aguero has managed 181 league goals since he arrived in England a decade ago and sits fourth in the list of leading Premier League scorers. Now 32, surpassing Alan Shearer’s record of 260 appears beyond him, but third-place Andy Cole (187) and Wayne Rooney (208) are both within his sights.
Chelsea have struggled to get the best out of Timo Werner since his arrival from RB Leipzig last summer and are said to be monitoring the situation.
That Aguero is available on a free transfer will make him a hugely appealing alternative to Haaland, who reports claim will cost well in advance of £100m if Dortmund do eventually agree to sell him this summer.
