Haller will undergo chemotherapy

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Sebastien Haller will undergo chemotherapy after tests revealed that the testicular tumour found earlier this month was malignant.

Haller complained of feeling unwell after a training session shortly after he joined the German club from Ajax in the summer.

A statement from Dortmund on Saturday said that the 28-year-old would now begin the necessary treatment required and would subsequently be ruled out for “several months.”

It said: “Sebastien Haller (28) will be absent from Borussia Dortmund for several months. The histological findings revealed a malignant testicular tumour. Haller therefore has to undergo chemotherapy treatment.”

Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl also wished the forward well in his recovery: “Sebastien will now receive the best possible treatment. The chances of recovery are very good.

“We wish him and his family a lot of strength and optimism and our thoughts are with him during this difficult time.”

Haller vows to ‘come back stronger’

Haller joined the Bundesliga outfit from Ajax earlier this month, having been at West Ham before that. He scored 34 times for the Dutch side last season – the best goalscoring season of his career.

11 of his goals came in eight Champions League games, but Ajax were eliminated by Benfica in the last-16 stage.

In a message to supporters earlier this month, the Ivory Coast international thanked supporters for their messages and vowed to “come back stronger.”

He said: “I want to thank you again from the bottom of my heart for all these many warm messages received. I was very moved to see these beautiful reactions and I even feel like I don’t deserve so much.

“Thank you all for your many messages of support and affection since yesterday’s announcement. My family and I thank you. I will now focus on my recovery to come back stronger.”
