Wiegman is one of the names linked with the England men’s job
Sarina Wiegman has responded to calls from fans for her to replace Gareth Southgate as manager of the men’s national team.
Southgate announced his resignation on Tuesday morning, less than 48 hours after England lost the Euro final 2-1 to Spain.
It was their second final defeat in three years after they were beaten on penalties by Italy in 2021.
Wiegman shuts down job shouts
Wiegman, who managed the England Lionesses to European glory in 2022 and to a World Cup final last year, was speaking to the media after her side secured qualification to Euro 2025 last night after drawing 0-0 with Sweden, where she was asked about the recent links.
However, Wiegman was quick to shut down that idea when asked in her press conference.
She said: “To be honest I think it’s really inappropriate to have that conversation. I’m with the Lionesses, I’m very happy.”
Wiegman is under contract with the FA until 2027 and is focused on defending the Euros, which takes place next year.
‘He is such a nice person and a great coach;
Like many others, Wiegman also paid tribute to Southgate for his “inspirational work”, stating that he’s made “England very proud”.
“I’m disappointed that he [Southgate] is going to leave. I really like Gareth as a human being but also as a coach,” Wiegman said.
“I think it’s really inspirational what he has done, so well, for such a long time with the England team. That’s something to be really, really proud of and it makes England very proud.
“He is such a nice person and a great coach. We wouldn’t see each other all the time but when we would see each other it was very nice. What he has done for England football is really incredible.”
At the time of writing, some bookies have the Lionesses boss as a 50-1 outsider to be awarded the job.
One X user said: “Two-time European Champion and two-time World Cup finalist Sarina Wiegman is most qualified to replace Southgate and I won’t be told otherwise!”
Eddie Howe and Graham Potter remain favourites to succeed Southgate although reports this morning suggest the FA have their heart set on Pep Guardiola and are prepared to wait for the City manager to become available.
