Russian journalist catches out Van Gaal with question about Man United defender

Tom Victor

As a man who has spent more than two decades managing some of Europe’s top teams, you’d expect Louis van Gaal to be pretty clued up.

At the very least you’d expect him to know his own squad inside out, but it turns out there are a couple of things that still get past the Manchester United manager.

United take on CSKA Moscow this week in the Champions League, and the local press in Russia were keen to get Van Gaal’s thoughts on Marcos Rojo’s development after the Argentine spent a season with rivals Spartak.

It’s certainly a question the Dutch coach wasn’t expecting, but he brushed it aside in the most foolproof way possible – by denying any knowledge of the matter whatsoever.

“I didn’t know that he played for Spartak Moscow,” Van Gaal told the Russian journalist.

No further questions.
