Rugby player Alex Evans dies during match aged 31

The match between Cwmllynfell RF and Crynant RFC was in memory of a club stalwart who died earlier this year

A 31-year-old rugby player died after suffering a cardiac arrest over the weekend during a match played in memory of a club stalwart who died earlier this year. Cwmllynfell RFC player Alex Evans fell ill during a match against Crynant on Saturday. In a social media post, the club referred to the flanker as a "brother". "We have lost a brother on the field and it is hurting so much." A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said it was called to reports of a player needing urgent medical attention at Cwmllynfell RFC, Cwmllynfell,  around 3pm. https://twitter.com/gaxenderrie/status/1429733076498800646   South Wales Police said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding Evans' death, but the corner has been notified. Gareth Evans, the secretary of the club, said: "Alex is a village boy, he's Cwmllynfell through and through. https://twitter.com/ystalyferarfc/status/1429701279870238721   "I'll remember him - we'll all remember him - with the smile that he had. He always had a smile on his face, whatever he was doing, whether he was working, playing rugby, training, even having a pint with him. "He always had time for you and always had that smile on his face." He continued to say that Evans was "loved in the community and further afield" and that all sports clubs should have a defibrillator at hand. Evans is survived by his partner and a young daughter.
