Sweet Caroline is an absolute belter of a tune. That’s undeniable. It’s especially enjoyable to sing at sporting events, whether that be the football, the rugby, or the darts.

The Neil Diamond tune has become a classic thanks to its simplicity of the chorus, its satisfying crescendo, and that gap where you can sing ‘So good, so good, so good!’. Magic.

During ITV’s pre-game coverage ahead of England’s Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark, the panel were discussing just what makes it the perfect song for these sorts of occasions.

Mark Pougatch, Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Ian Wright were unanimous in their adoration for the song, but Roy Keane had a story to tell, because he has a story for everything.

After Neville mentioned that Keane had seen Diamond in concert, the former Manchester United captain revealed that the experience was somewhat hindered by the fact he ended up arguing with the person next to him at the concert.

“I ended up arguing with the woman next to me,” he said.

“She kept singing the songs out loud, so I ended up in a bit of a trouble that night. But brilliant concert.”

Roy Keane could have an argument in an empty room. But if this is what makes his punditry to entertaining, we’re all for it.
