Roy Keane brands Liverpool supporters “classless” over booing of Trent Alexander-Arnold

The ex-Liverpool player appeared at Anfield as an opponent for the first time on Tuesday

The 28-year-old Englishman joined Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer after representing Liverpool for close to two decades.

With Los Blancos drawn against Liverpool in the Champions League league phase, Trent looked all set to make his grand return from the start at Anfield, only for manager Xabi Alonso to keep him on the bench until the 81st minute.

Despite winning every trophy available with the Reds, Trent received a less than favourable reaction from the supporters in the ground when he eventually did make it onto the pitch.

While Liverpool eventually secured all three points via an excellent Alexis Mac Allister header, most post-match attention was given instead to the reaction Trent received.

It has dominated conversations throughout the week, and was a key point of discussion during the latest episode of The Overlap.

When asked about the Liverpool fan response, Man United legend Roy Keane said: "Why would you go to a match and boo a lad who has played 260/270 games?

"You don't have to wish him luck in Madrid but to go to the effort of thinking, 'I'm going to boo this kid' as a local lad and Liverpool fans for some reason think 'we've got class', no, Liverpool fans have to have a good look at themselves.

"For a young player to go and try something new, to boo the kid [scoffs], bloody hell, you don't have to cheer him on but don't boo him."

The result over Real Madrid was a statement victory for Arne Slot's side and could be a key turning point in Liverpool's season.

Despite spending more than £400 million on new summer arrivals, the Reds have lost six matches already.

They will need to follow up Tuesday's performance with a win over Man City on Sunday if they want to make up any ground on league leaders Arsenal.
