Play was suspended during Barcelona’s game against Celta Vigo on Monday night after defender Ronald Araujo had to be taken to hospital following a nasty clash of heads with teammate Gavi.

Barca were leading 3-1 at the time after goals from Memphis Depay and a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before Iago Aspas pulled one back.

Jeison Murillo was then sent off in the 58th minute before play had to be stopped shortly after at the Camp Nou as Araujo and youngster Gavi both clashed heads together in midfield.

Araujo had initially gotten back up and began to run before worryingly falling to the floor.

It was immediately clear that the Uruguay international had come off worse than Gavi as his teammates called for an ambulance to enter the pitch before he was placed onto a stretcher, while the 17-year-old was deemed fit to continue.

It was later confirmed that Araujo was conscious in hospital

Barcelona confirmed in a post on Twitter that the defender had been taken to hospital, where he would undergo further tests.

They said: “Ronald Araujo has suffered a concussion and has been taken to the hospital to undergo further testing.”

Thankfully, following some serious concern about the health of the 23-year-old, commentators at Premier Sports confirmed that he was fully conscious in the hospital and had been taken straight there as a precautionary measure following signs of concussion.

Following the delay to play, both sides played out the remaining minutes of the game, in which Barca were able to hold on and secure the three points.

The win for Xavi’s side meany that the Catalan giants remained in second place, which they have all but consolidated now given that third-placed Sevilla are seven points behind them – although they do have one game in hand.
