Chelsea winning the league, and having the highest wage bill, is further evidence that payments to players, rather than transfer outlays, have a greater influence in determining a team's final league position.
According to a 2010 report by Sporting Intelligence, a Premier League team's success is 85% determined by it's wage bill.
"In the Premier League, it's 85%, or in other words, the correlation between wages and success is 85%. In short: you spend a lot, you've got a good chance of winning, and vice versa."
Somebody should probably tell Ed Woodward that it's not about paying Barcelona £140m for Neymar, it matters what you pay him.
