Real Madrid expelled from Copa Del Rey

Tom Victor

Real Madrid have failed to find an escape route after their monumental cup blunder.

The 2014 Copa Del Rey champions have been eliminated from the competition after using an ineligible player in their victory over Cadiz, according to reports in Spain.

Mundo Deportivo have revealed that the club will play no further part in the competition as Denis Cheryshev – who scored the opening goal – should have been serving a suspension.

Cheryshev was booked three times in last season’s competition while on loan at Villarreal, and manager Rafa Benitez had said “there is nothing more to say on our part” after learning of the investigation.

Madrid are expected to appeal the decision.
