Premier League ‘in talks’ to introduce huge new mid-game rule

This would change everything.

When huge changes are implemented, it often doesn't go down well with supporters.

For example, the hugely controversial Video Assistant Referee was introduced in 2019 and still divides supporters in the decisions influenced by off-the-pitch officials.

And on Monday night during the Bournemouth v Southampton match, a mid-game interview from Marcus Tavernier went viral as he spoke to Sky Sports.

The Cherries star was substituted in the 76th minute and then was subsequently interviewed by reporters on the side of the pitch before the game's conclusion.

It is reported that mid-game interviews could be introduced to the game as soon as the 2025/26 season.

However, according to the Daily Mail, there is huge opposition for this prospect.

Contrastingly, teams towards the bottom end of the table reportedly see it as an opportunity to promote their players and club's brand.

It's said that the Premier League are currently monitoring the likes of pit lane interviews in motorsports, as well as the use of a wicket-keeper camera in cricket.

The Premier League would not speak directly to participating players, it is understood.

There have been previous trials of this interview type, with Ben Chilwell speaking following a Premier League Summer Series Fixture first-half versus Brighton.
