Hernandez played 175 times for Leeds United

Former Leeds United man Pablo Hernandez was reduced to tears after 250 Whites fans traveled to his final game for UD Castellon on Saturday.

The Spaniard made 175 appearances for Leeds, scoring 36 times and registering 41 assists during his time in Yorkshire. He played an instrumental role in the club’s promotion back to the Premier League in 2019/20 under Marcelo Bielsa.

The 37-year-old left Leeds last year and returned to hometown club Castellon, where he is also the owner. After featuring this season, Hernandez made his last appearance for the club in a 3-1 defeat in the third division against Cornella at the weekend.

However, the day ended on a positive note – thanks to the Leeds fans in attendance at the Nou Estadi Castàlia. According to reports, groups of people on stag dos – as well as members of the ‘Valencia Whites’ supporters club – turned up to support the Spaniard, giving him an incredible ovation at the end of the match.

He was overcome with emotion, with footage showing Hernandez, with a Leeds scarf in his hand, in tears as supporters chanted his name. The midfielder was then serenaded with the Whites’ ‘Marching on together’ anthem.

Following this, he signed autographs and performed the iconic Leeds badge salute gesture.

Hernandez’s wife, Mar Garcia, thanked Leeds supporters for their incredible support and backing in a series of tweets. She also confirmed that he would be back at Elland Road in the near future for a “proper mutual goodbye”.

The post read: “Overwhelmed with all the love Leeds fans showed us one more time. Just to clarify, Pablo is not retired yet, still got some football on him. And we will come back to ER one day and we will make sure you all know so we can have a proper mutual goodbye. #mot.”
