Oxford United boss has a personal reason for wanting Man United in FA Cup

“Manchester United away” is the classic answer whenever a lower-league manager is asked for his preferred FA Cup draw.

But for Michael Appleton, there’s an added reason why he’d want a trip to Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old, who went into management after injury forced him into early retirement, began his career with Man United – signing his first senior contract one year after the famed ‘Class of 92’.

“From a selfish point of view I’d be delighted with Manchester United because of my history and I’m still a big fan, believe it or not – even now,” Appleton said after the shock victory over Swansea City.

Born in Salford, Appleton made just two senior appearances for his home-town club before spells at Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion.

Oxford is his fourth managerial job, after Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers.
