Heartbreaking for the Oviedo players
Real Oviedo players were left devastated after they thought they had moved one step closer to a return to La Liga, only to be told they hadn’t finished in the play-off spots.
Oviedo had the chance to finish in the top six on the final day of Spain’s second tier season, providing they won their game against Ibiza and one of Girona or Las Palmas lost.
Oviedo won with a last minute winner
Jose Angel Ziganda’s men kept up their side of the bargain with a 3-2 win, including a last minute winner from former Swansea City striker Borja Baston.

While Las Palmas won their game against Sporting Gijon, there was hope that Girona would lose their match against Gurgos and with them drawing 0-0 at the time, there was every chance it could happen.
Oviedo left heartbroken after thinking they had qualified for the play offs
News then began to filter around the Carlos Tartiere Stadium that Burgos had scored late on and therefore sparked wild celebrations amongst the Oviedo camp as they thought they had reached the play offs.
But ecstasy soon turned to agony as it emerged that what they had been told wasn’t actually true as the game finished 0-0, meaning Girona secured the final play off spot.

Understandably, there was a deflated atmosphere around the ground as reality hit home that Oviedo would have to wait another season at least to try and secure a return to La Liga for the first time since 2001.
The events in Spain were reminiscent of the final day drama in the Premier League when Liverpool fans thought they had gone top of the league for a short moment, only to realise they had been pranked by the travelling Wolverhampton Wanderers fans.
Manchester City eventually went on to win after they came from two goals behind to beat Aston Villa.
