‘McBurnie is a role model and shouldn’t be doing that’

The ‘fan’ who was allegedly stamped on by Sheffield United striker Ole McBurnie claims that he ‘feared he was going to die’ during the altercation.

As reported by the Sun, George Brinkley, 26, was ‘dragged over while celebrating on the pitch’ with thousands of other Nottingham Forest fans after Steve Cooper’s men defeated United in the Championship play-off semi final at the Forest ground.

The report adds that Brinkley was ‘surrounded by United staff and players’ before he was ‘stamped’ on by Scottish international McBurnie.

“I suffered two serious head injuries as a child so I was desperately trying to protect myself,” said Brinkley.

“If I’d been stamped on and my head smashed on the ground it could have killed me.

“McBurnie is a role model and shouldn’t be doing that. I want him to face justice.”

McBurnie reportedly arrested

The Sheffield United frontman was reportedly arrested on Friday (May 20), with the Telegraph reporting that police had confirmed a 25-year-old man – which Telegraph Sport report is McBurnie – had been held on suspicion of assault on Thursday before being released on bail.

Nottinghamshire Police said in a statement: “Police investigating a disturbance at the end of a football match have arrested and interviewed a suspect.

“Officers have been reviewing the contents of a social media video showing an incident at the end of Tuesday’s play off semi-final match between Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United at the City Ground.

“A 25-year-old man presented himself to police this afternoon (Thursday) and was arrested on suspicion of assault. He has since been released on police bail.”

Detective Inspector Nicholas Hall added: “We are working hard to understand the sequence of events depicted in this video and have now interviewed a suspect.

“As our investigation continues we would like to speak [to] any other witnesses who have not yet come forward.”

Scotland striker previously denied stamping on fan

Despite being accused of stamping on the fan, McBurnie has denied doing so and instead insinuated that he was trying to step over him on the ground.
