Oliver Burke completes comeback of the season as Dortmund are humiliated

Football, bloody hell

Oliver Burke scored a late, late, late winner for Werder Bremen over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, completing a spectacular late comeback at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund, it seemed, were home and hosed, on course for winning their third Bundesliga game in succession to maintain their 100 per cent start to the new season.

Having opened the scoring inside first-half stoppage time courtesy of Julian Brandt, Raphael Guerreiro looked to have sealed the three points when his shot from distance doubled the lead with 15 minutes to go.

But no.

With two minutes of regulation time to plat, Bremen halved the deficit through Lee Buchanan’s smartly taken finish from the edge of the area.

Suddenly, Dortmund were nervy, with the visitors playing with their tails up.

Three minutes into stoppage time, they levelled. A cross into the area was guided into the corner of the Dortmund goal by the head of Niklas Schimdt. The away side looked to have snatched an unlikely point.

They hadn’t. Bremen won the ball back in the fifth minute of stoppage time and moved forward. A diagonal pass was slipped through the Dortmund defence into the path of Burke. His first touch appeared to have made the angle too tight, but his fierce shot was enough to beat Gregor Kobel at his near post.

Three goals in the last seven minutes, and Dortmund snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
