It’s official, Manchester United have knocked Liverpool off their f**king perch

Stats don't lie.

“My greatest challenge is not what’s happening at the moment, my greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their fucking perch. And you can print that.”

Alex Ferguson.

A leader. A visionary. A winner.

When he took over at Manchester United, the scales were tipped firmly towards Merseyside.

He watched Liverpool waltz to 18 league titles, whilst the men at Old Trafford had stalled at seven. Seven.

13 league wins and 25 other trophies later and football was never the same again. Manchester United was never the same again.

After Jose Mourinho broke a tame enough record with Sunday’s 3-2 EFL Cup win over Southampton – the United boss equalling Brian Clough and Fergie’s League Cup triumphs with four titles now – Manchester United also asserted their dominance over English football.

In what has been a barren spell for the club – relatively speaking – the last three domestic trophies have still all come back to Old Trafford.

Two of those were major trophies and, because of Sunday’s League Cup win, United have now surpassed Liverpool as the most successful English club with 42 major trophies.

Discounting Community Shield victories, second tier triumphs and even Super Cup wins, United have won 42 whilst Liverpool have 41.

Manchester United major trophies:

  • 20 league titles
  • 12 FA Cup titles
  • 5 Football League Cup titles
  • 3 European Cup titles
  • 1 European Cup Winners’ Cup
  • 1 FIFA Club World Cup

42 major trophies.

Liverpool major trophies:

  • 18 league titles
  • 7 FA Cup titles
  • 8 Football League Cup titles
  • 5 European Cup titles
  • 3 UEFA Cup titles

41 major trophies.

To rub further salt into the wounds at Anfield, United even did it with Marouane Fellaini on the bloody field.
