Nobby Stiles: Tributes pour in as Man Utd and England great dies, aged 78
The World Cup-winner has passed away aged 78
Tributes have been made from the football world and beyond following the death of Nobby Stiles, aged 78.
Born in Collyhurst, Manchester, in 1942, Stiles was a member of Manchester United's first European Cup triumph at Wembley in 1968. He is fondly remembered for playing his part in England's only World Cup win at the same venue two years earlier.
His death comes after a long battle with prostate cancer and advanced dementia.
"The Stiles family are sad to announce that Nobby Stiles passed away peacefully today surrounded by his family after a long illness," a statement read.
"The family kindly ask for privacy at this sad time."
Gary Neville, who was coached by Stiles during his own time in United's academy, led the tributes to him on Twitter:
Rest in Peace Nobby. Thank you for all you did for us. You taught us how to fight for everything in that red shirt .

Such sad news to hear that Nobby Stiles has passed away. I know he was ill for a while but doesn’t take away the shock. He was my coach as a kid @ManUtd and what an unbelievably humble human being. A massive influence on myself as a youngster. Thoughts and love with his family.
