It appears that Evra was targeted by certain sections.

Former Manchester United and Juventus defender Patrice Evra has become the first player to receive a red card before the kick-off of a game in the history of the Europa League after an ugly altercation with his own fans in Portugal.

Before Marseille’s match against Guimarães even kicked-off, Evra was shown a red card after kicking one of his own supporters in the head.

L’equippe journalist Mathieu Grégoire has been reporting from the match and he stated that Evra was targeted by a section of the travelling supporters.

“Evra was the victim of songs and insults for half an hour, he went over to see the stewards to explain and the situation degenerated”, said Grégoire via Twitter.

The defender had initially gone over to the fans to talk to them, but the situation quickly escalated.

Evra had been named as a substitute for the game but he was sent back the dressing room before kickoff. UEFA’s game log confirmed the sending off: “The Marseille substitute has been shown a red card following an incident with the crowd.”

Regarding the match, Marseille lost 1-0 and they also had Boubacar Kamara sent-off.

As for Evra’s punishment, UEFA’s disciplinary body is likely to rule on any further action on Friday.

It appears that this footage is how it all started.
