Manchester United fans was ‘next best thing to Pep’ to replace Mourinho as manager

He's a class act, but would he take the job?

They won two trophies last season FFS.

Let’s have it right. Many Manchester United supporters with any level of perspective and common sense acknowledge that Jose Mourinho has the mother of all challenges on his hands to return the club to former eminence. His first 19 months at the club have been far from perfect, but the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss has undoubtedly improved the side’s fortunes in his first season and a bit.

That said, there is another section of the Old Trafford faithful who aren’t particularly enamoured with the Portuguese and never were. They don’t like the baggage he brings to role, and feel that his brand of football is not – and never was – in keeping with the traditions of the club. They are as valid in their opinions as any other supporter, and should be commended for their consistent stance.

Then there is the last bunch, who are perhaps the most vocal. They are knee-jerk supporters who change their mood and opinions from game to game. One minute Mourinho is the super-coach they always wanted and the perfect man to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford. The next he is a beleaguered has-been; yesterday’s man who is dragging their club down with him.

It is perhaps the latter grouping (with a sprinkling of the consistent anti-Jose group) who seem to have had enough of the Artist formerly known as the Special One. They have resigned themselves to Mourinho falling further and further behind his nemesis Guardiola at Manchester City – and have identified the closest thing to Pep as a replacement for the current Old Trafford incumbent.

You’ve guessed it, there is a growing call for former Barca boss Luis Enrique to replace Jose in the United hot seat – and take on his Camp Nou predecessor head-on.

Enrique took over the reigns at Barcelona in 2014, after the late Tito Vilanova and Gerardo Martino had followed Guardiola as the Blaugrana boss. During his three years at the helm, he won an incredible *deep breath* two La Ligas, three Copa del Reys, one Supercopa, a UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and of course, the Champions League in 2015.

Is it too early to write-off Mourinho? Is Enrique the right man to replace him? Would he be interesting in the job? This lot have certainly made up their minds…
