Michy Batshuayi suffers suspected ankle break in derby match vs Schalke

He was stretchered off after a nasty tackle

Michy Batshuayi was on the receiving end of a tackle that is almost certain to rule him out of the World Cup in today's Revierderby between Schalke and Borussia Dortmund.

Schalke won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Yevhen Konoplyanka and Naldo but the injury to Batshuayi is a more pressing concern. After a poor first half of the season at Stamford Bridge, the Belgian had hit the ground running at Dortmund, whom he joined on loan to replace the Arsenal-bound Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January.

It seemed possible that Dortmund will sign Batshuayi permanently after his successful loan spell, but his future could be up in the air as it now looks like he could be out of this summer's World Cup, having sustained a suspected fracture to either his ankle or his leg in a 50/50 tackle with former Spurs midfielder Benjamin Stambouli.

The striker was carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Hopefully the damage is not as severe as feared.

Belgium still have Romelu Lukaku and Dries Mertenes, two very different but equally excellent strikers to play as the centre forward in Russia this summer, but Batshuayi would have been a shoo-in to be selected by Roberto Martínez before this injury.
