Mauro Icardi omitted from Argentina World Cup squad by Jorge Sampaoli

The squads for the 2018 World Cup are slowly being confirmed and there’s already been so much drama.

We’ve already seen one retirement because of a World Cup snub. AS Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan hung up his international boots for good after being omitted from the Belgium squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer. His exclusion came as a huge shock to a lot of fans. Especially considering Adnan Januzaj and Christian Benteke made the squad.

Also, Spain not bringing Alvaro Morata, Marcos Alonso, Javi Martinez and Marc Bartra also turned some heads.

However, the biggest snub so far may have happened in South America. Somehow, Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi has been left out of his country’s 23-man squad for the tournament.

Icardi has been in lethal form in the Serie A this season. The striker bagged himself a whopping 29 league goals which saw him finish as joint-top scorer. Ciro Immobile of Lazio was the other player to finish with a tally of 29.

Interestingly, Icardi made way for Paulo Dybala, who scored 22 league goals for Juventus in the 2017/18 campaign. Dybala’s strike partner Gonzalo Higuain, who finished the season with 16 league goals to his name, also made the squad.
