The incident took place during a game on Monday night

Veteran football commentator Martin Tyler was reportedly punched in the back during a Vanarama National League South match on Monday night.

Tyler, who is best known for his role with Sky Sports, is an assistant coach at Woking Football Club and was apparently struck by an opposition supporter late on in the game.

When Wealdstone opened the scoring in the 85th minute, it’s alleged that a home fan reached forward to the dugout and made contact with Tyler, 72.

“It’s disappointing. Martin was punched and that is not very good,” Woking manager Alan Dowson told David Richardson of the Non-League Paper.

JOE reached out to Woking for comment on Tuesday morning and while the Surrey-based club was unwilling to add to the post-match comments of their manager, they confirmed that an incident had taken place involving Tyler.

The offending fan has not been identified and while a discussion took place between the pair of management teams after the final whistle, it remains unclear whether the referee in charge of the game was made aware of the incident.

Tyler, a lifelong Woking fan, followed Dowson to the Cardinals earlier this year after spells with Walton & Hersham, Kingstonian and Hampton & Richmond Borough Football Club.
