Manchester United supporters’ Felipe Anderson hopes raised then crushed in a matter of hours

Simon Lloyd

There hasn’t be much for Manchester United fans to shout about lately.

With this in mind, you can’t blame some of them for getting a little bit excited at the news that the club had secured the services of a new player… even if that player was a Brazilian named Anderson.

Lazio’s Felipe Anderson was linked with a January switch to Old Trafford which didn’t materialise, but reports earlier on Monday appeared to suggest the player would be swapping Rome for Manchester in the summer.

Comments attributed to Lazio’s president, Claudio Lotito, claimed a €60m (almost £47m) deal had already been struck with United.

“Felipe Anderson will move to Manchester United next season, for €60 million,” Lotito allegedly said.

“I bought Felipe Anderson for €8 million, and I’ve already sold him on for €60 million.”

Unfortunately for those United supporters looking forward to their new signing’s arrival, within hours, their hopes were dashed by a statement from Lazio’s official website – denying that Lotito had made any such comments.
