Since moving from Southampton in 2014, Luke Shaw has struggled at Manchester United for form and fitness.
This being said, the left-back endured horrific luck when a good run of form at the start of the 15/16 season was tragically cut short when he broke his leg playing against PSV Eindhoven. That leg break had psychological effects as well as physical, and his turbulent relationship with Mourinho isn’t exactly a secret.
To his credit, Shaw has managed to wrestle back a slot in the starting XI, he was picked from the off in the last four matches, and he has impressed the United hierarchy with his performances and application in training.
United have rewarded Shaw for his upturn in form by triggering the one-year extension in his contract, tying the defender down until 2019.
In recent months, Tottenham left-back Danny Rose has been linked with a move to Old Trafford after publicly expressing his desire to play in the north of England.
But with Shaw’s contract being extended, United seem to have put their faith in the 22-year-old.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United will continue to monitor Rose, but the Yorkshireman may have to wait for a move up north -unless Man City want to want to splash another £50m on a full-back to step in for the injured Benjamin Mendy?
It’s also reported that United are keeping an eye on Celtic wonderkid Kieran Tierney, but for now, the left-back slot is Shaw’s.
