Bastian Schweinsteiger was preparing to play for Germany in their Euro 2016 qualifier against Ireland, only to pick up an unspecified injury in the warm-up.
The 31-year-old ruled himself out of the international game, and will face a race against time to be fit for United's Premier League trip to Everton.
Van Gaal will hope it's nothing too serious.
