Manager of non-league Sutton can laugh at himself after Liverpool slip-of-the-tongue

You can forgive him for this.

Tom Victor

It’s not too often you see Sutton United get further than Liverpool in the FA Cup, so we can forgive Paul Doswell for this.

The manager of the non-league outfit masterminded a 1-0 victory over Championship high-flyers Leeds United to ensure the lowest-ranked team left in the competition have been able to keep their fairytale run going.

Both Sutton and fellow Conference outfit Lincoln City will have to wait until Monday evening to find out who they will face in the last 16, but it won’t be Liverpool, who lost at home to Wolves in their fourth round match.

And Doswell realised this just a second too late, suggesting he was hoping to meet “the Liverpool, the Manchester United, the Man City…” before realising the error of his ways.

Sutton pay be 108th in the English football pyramid at the time of writing, but Liverpool aren’t the only top-flight club who they have outlasted in the competition.

At least eight of the teams left in the competition play at Championship level or below, with half of the Premier League teams already eliminated.

Bournemouth, Everton, Sunderland, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United all fell in the third round, while this weekend brought defeats for Crystal Palace, Hull City, Liverpool and Southampton.

Leicester City could yet be eliminated at this stage, with their meeting with Derby County going to a replay after a 2-2 draw.
