Man United make ‘contact with new manager’ as pressure on Carrick mounts

Before the current international break began, the Red Devils endured a torrid week, suffering defeats to Manchester City and Brighton, before a last minute Matheus Cunha strike saw them narrowly avoid a further loss at the hands of relegation-threatened Fulham.

While Carrick succeeded in capturing huge goodwill with the Old Trafford hierarchy with his interim spell last season, helping the club to an impressive Champions League qualification, it has been a different story this term.

Amid the downturn in form, questions have begun to arise as to whether Manchester United may consider a shock move to replace Carrick in the dugout.

While all reports so far suggest the Man United manager is safe and sound for the meantime, it has emerged that the club have reportedly made quiet enquiries over the availability of a potential replacement, who is said to be top of the club's wishlist.

According to Calciomercato, Antonio Conte is the manager Manchester United are considering as a Carrick replacement, with the outlet reporting that: "Initial contacts have been made to assess his availability."

Antonio Conte won the 2016/17 Premier League title with Chelsea.

Conte is one of the most successful managers in recent European history, winning Serie A titles with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli, as well as a Premier League crown with Chelsea.

Having left Naples in the spring, Conte is available now, but is also being courted by former club Juventus.

It simply remains to be seen if the Red Devils choose to push forward with a move for the coach, a situation that will depend entirely on whether Carrick manages to turn his fortunes around when the international break ends next month.
