Man United cult hero has found himself a new club

He flopped at United, but gained cult hero status

Reuben Pinder

Yeah, Bebé!

Sometimes footballers can gain a cult hero status not from being good, but from being overwhelmingly bad.

In 2010, when Bebé joined Manchester United, he was somewhat of an unknown quantity, coming from Vitória de Guimarães, for whom he did not play one league match. That in itself should have been a red flag, but United had seen something in videos that convinced him United should sign him.

But, after four years as a United player, which included three loan spells, he departed. Not hated – it was hardly his own fault he was out of his depth – but with a cult hero status. He would forever more be referred to as the bottom end of the flop-ometer when evaluating how new signings fare at United.

United fans will be happy to learn that the 27-year-old has found himself a new club.

It was announced today that the winger has joined Rayo Vallecano. The second tier Spanish club, situated in the outskirts of Madrid, have gained a cult following of their own by championing a lot of progressive, left-wing causes.

The second division in Spain could be the right place for Bebé to thrive and the people of Vallecas will be hoping he can fire Rayo back into La Liga.
