Luke Shaw and Memphis Depay: A leftfield bromance

Nooruddean Choudry

One was a marauding young fullback from Southampton, the other a maverick powerhouse from Holland. Together they found a special bond on the left wing…

Forget the Ander Herrera/David De Gea/Juan Mata Iberian clique, there’s a burgeoning new bromance happening at Manchester United these days – young Luke Shaw and newbie Memphis Depay.

The pair have been seemingly inseparable during United’s pre-season tour of the US. Whether by accident or design, Louis van Gaal paired the two together in training and a beautiful friendship has blossomed.

For his part, Shaw is playing it cool: “He [Memphis] is around my age…you could say we have got on really well but it is just a team thing really. With him playing on the left, it’s a good thing.”

The feeling is mutual, with Memphis taking to social media to post a birthday message for his new partner on the left side of United’s formation – and perhaps more importantly – his new friend…

Shaw has even taken the unprecedented step of changing his background on Twitter to an image of the pair training together – a sure indication that he’s found a new BFF…

If the pair can combine as well on the pitch, United fans have something special to look forward to in the coming season. Shaw looks as fit as ever, whilst Memphis has impressed his teammates already.

Here at JOE we’ve managed to get hold of some exclusive footage of the pair bonding for the very first time on the training pitch. Left side, strong side
