Liverpool weren’t the only Premier League team to bid for Mauro Icardi in January

Liverpool’s attacking problems almost saw them complete a stunning 11th-hour deal for Inter striker Mauro Icardi on transfer deadline day.

But it turns out the Merseyside club weren’t the only ones to move for the Argentine in January.

Icardi himself revealed to Italian publication Corriere Dello Sport that Manchester United were also keen, but that he had no plans to leave the San Siro.

The 22-year-old is captain of Roberto Mancini’s team, and has scored at a rate of better than one goal every two games for the Italian club since joining from Sampdoria in 2013.

Liverpool’s interest in last season’s Serie A top scorer forced bookmakers to slash odds, but the prospect of Champions League football next season is likely to convince him to stay in Italy.

Inter are two points and two places behind third-placed Roma, but have a game in hand on their rivals.
