With game still poised at 1-0 on the half hour mark, the genius Argentine was shepherded wide of the goal as he tried to make the most of a ball spilled by the goalkeeper following a Turan shot. The visiting players must have thought danger averted.
Except as Messi scampered further away from the six-yard box, they should have known he was conjuring up something special. With lovely footwork and his sublime version of the Cruyff turn, he managed to bamboozle the whole defence as one.
A perfect ball across the goal followed, which was inches away from being converted by his teammate. It is a moment that deserved completion, but it was not to be. That said, it won't be forgotten in a hurry by those who witnessed its artistry...
