Marcelo Bielsa future in serious doubt as Leeds eye replacement

Bielsa is reportedly on the brink at Elland Road

Marcelo Bielsa’s future at Leeds United appears to be in serious doubt with the club said to be considering dismissing the Argentine imminently.

Leeds followed their midweek thumping to Liverpool at Anfield with a 4-0 loss to Tottenham at Elland Road on Saturday, a result which leaves them just three points above the drop zone – with 18th-placed Burnley having three games in hand over them.

According to The Athletic, the Leeds hierarchy have been considering relieving Bielsa of his duties since the 6-0 defeat to Liverpool, with Jesse Marsch a leading candidate to replace him.

Marsch, who was dismissed as manager of RB Leipzig earlier in the season, is said to have been on Leeds’ radar to take over from Bielsa in the summer, but the club’s concerning slump in form has raised the possibility that a move for the American could now be accelerated.

Despite his short-lived time in Leipzig, Marsch is still highly rated within the game having previously managed MLS sides Montreal Impact and New York Red Bulls before moving to Austria with Red Bull Salzburg.

Bielsa took charge at Elland Road in 2018, leading Leeds back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence in his second season at the helm.

They settled well to life back in the top flight last season, finishing ninth. But this season has been difficult, with Bielsa failing to slow their drop down the table in recent weeks.
