Some things are much bigger than football.

After news emerged yesterday that Alex Ferguson has been admitted to hospital for emergency surgery following a brain haemorrhage, Liverpool FC issued a statement about their fiercest rival.

The club wrote: “A great rival but also a great friend who supported this club during its most difficult time, it is hoped that Sir Alex will make a full recovery.”

This note refers to the actions of Sir Alex following the death of 96 Liverpool fans at Hillsborough Stadium.

Currently doing the rounds on Twitter is the letter that then-Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish sent to Ferguson to thank him for the role he played in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Dalglish wrote: “We needed all the help we could get at that time and we greatly appreciated the co-operation and kindness of you and the lads in attending Colin Ashcroft’s funeral. We know that see you all there was a great comfort to his family.”
