CBS Sports presenter Kate Scott was refused a handshake by former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov on live TV yesterday.
Reporting from Bayern Munich's home stadium, the Allianz Arena, for this year's UEFA Champions League final - contested between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan - Scott welcomed the Russian martial artist for a brief chat alongside pundits Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards, as well as internet personality iShowSpeed.
While he made sure to shake hands with the guys, Nurmagomedov opted to simply put his hand across his heart when Scott attempted to follow suit.
"Nice to meet you, welcome to the show," she said, before the penny dropped. "I apologise, thank you so much."
According to Bradford Muslim College, Muslim men cannot shake hands with non-mahram women and vice versa, which explains Nurmagomedov's initially awkward stance.
Over on social media, viewers tuning into the football coverage praised Scott for her reaction.
"Great interaction between Khabib and Kate, respect other people's boundaries and no need to be in your feelings about it. Khabib showed respect in his way while sticking to his principles. Top class," wrote one of them.
Another added: "Great appreciation to Khabib for holding firmly to his beliefs, and great appreciation to Kate for understanding that."
A third user shared: "It was a bit awkward seeing Khabib skip the handshake with Kate. She handled it like a total pro, though—calm and classy."
"In his own beliefs, he showed her the UTMOST respect by not shaking her hand. If he did, it would almost essentially be him disrespecting her," pointed out a fourth.
By the time the final whistle sounded on Saturday, May 31, PSG had inflicted a true demolition job on their Italian rivals, winning 5-0 thanks to goals from Achraf Hakimi, Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu.
