John Stones has now scored more World Cup goals than Wayne Rooney

We are hearing that football is in fact coming home

It’s raining goals

England’s emphatic win over Panama was a joy to behold for England fans. There was never any real possibility that Panama would cause an upset, but seeing England score five goals in one half will have been the most enjoyable experience watching England that many fans have ever had.

Harry Kane’s hattrick put him top of the goalscoring leaderboard as he brought his tally up to five, having already bagged a brace against Tunisia. John Stones also scored his first goals for England, both headers in the first half.

That John Stones brace took his total World Cup goals tally above that of former England captain and the country’s all-time record goalscorer Wayne Rooney.

Rooney only ever managed to score one goal at a World Cup, against Uruguay in 2014. England still lost that game 2-1, as Luis Suarez scored two goals past a helpless Joe Hart.

Incredibly, Rooney fired blanks at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, although he had just recovered from a metatarsal injury going into that tournament. He also failed to score in South Africa in 2010. The less said about England’s performances there, the better.

It was an incredible afternoon for England, the team’s morale, and football’s chances of finally coming home. It was also a great afternoon for John Stones, who has now officially scored more World Cup goals than England’s all-time top goalscorer.
