Joey Barton’s time at Rangers has officially come to an end

Which club will take the risk and sign him up?

Joey Barton is no longer a Rangers player.

Just 170 days after officially signing with the Scottish Premiership side, the controversial midfielder finds himself clubless.

Rangers announced on Thursday afternoon that they had agreed to terminate Barton’s contract at Ibrox after a series of issues created unwanted headlines.

The 34-year-old was recently suspended by the club after a training ground row before he was charged with breaking betting rules

But there appeared to be a future for Barton under Mark Warburton when the player was told he could resume first-team training after disciplinary proceedings came to an end.

Just days after that update, though, the club revealed that Barton had been signed off with stress and was expected to meet with managing director Stewart Robertson in order to discuss the termination of his £20,000-a-week contract.

Barton can’t seem to keep away from controversy and one would imagine that clubs will think long and hard before signing him to a deal, which would presumably be the last of his professional career considering his age.

Aston Villa and Leeds United remain in the conversation as potential destinations for the outspoken former Manchester City man.
