Literally the last thing Liverpool needed

Liverpool’s defensive injury woes have been compounded by reports of a ‘serious’ injury suffered by Joe Gomez while on international duty with England.

The Reds are already without Virgil Van Dijk for the foreseeable future, while Fabinho is still nursing a hamstring problem and Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up an injury at the weekend against Manchester City.

And now the Daily Mail are reporting that Joe Gomez has suffered a ‘serious’ injury ahead of England’s friendly with the Republic of Ireland.

England boss Gareth Southgate will provide an update on the central defender’s fitness in his press conference ahead of the Ireland game.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is one of many managers to complain of the hectic fixture schedule this season, compounded by the return to three subs rather than the five that were allowed during the restart in the summer.

“Hopefully we can play the Euros next summer but if we continue like this let’s see which players can be part of that,’ Klopp said on Sunday.

“We played [last month] after the international break at 12.30 on Saturday at Everton. Some of my players were coming back from Peru.

“These kind of things should not happen.”
