When news filtered through that Sunderland had signed a Bayern Munich defender, fans of the Black Cats could have been forgiven for getting a funny feeling in their unmentionables.

Jerome Boateng? Hardly. David Alaba? Yeah, right. Jan Kirchhoff? Who, exactly? The 25-year-old German replaced Danny Graham in the 58th minute with his side drawing 1-1 against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. Just 21 minutes had passed before it was 4-1 to the hosts, with Kirchhoff conceding a penalty and getting all sorts of abuse on Twitter for making what might be the worst debut since Jonathan Woodgate made his bow for Real Madrid. On that occasion, the former England defender scored an own goal against Athletic Club and then promptly got himself sent off. https://twitter.com/Eurosport_UK/status/688367613127344129 https://twitter.com/BenMcAleer1/status/688367501445574656 https://twitter.com/ashlord23/status/688367582009790464 https://twitter.com/FUTWIZ/status/688365383070433280 https://twitter.com/TVsCarlKinsella/status/688365444277862400 https://twitter.com/Gumtree/status/688365590680068096
