Jamie Carragher throws Shay Given under the bus after criticism of defending in charity game

Not his finest moment

Like every good defender, Jamie Carragher has passed the blame on to his goalkeeper after coming up with a howler during a charity game at the weekend.

Carragher was lining out for a Class of 92 & Friends side on Sunday for a charity match against Salford City at the Peninsula Stadium.

The Liverpool legend was a part of a back four which also featured both Neville brothers, Gary and Phil, while Newcastle legend Shay Given found himself between the sticks.

The game turned out to be an absolute cracker, as the teams played out a 4-4 draw, but Carragher has been trolled for his role in Salford’s first goal of the game.

With the Class of 92 & Friends enjoying a 2-0 lead, a ball was sent over the top of the defence and Carragher looked to be dealing with the trouble handily as he held off an opposition attacker and looked to roll it back to Given so that he could clear the danger.

But it didn’t quite go according to plan as the ball didn’t come close to arriving at Given’s feet and, in comical fashion, the ‘keeper and Carragher collided, which allowed the ball to dribble over the line and begin Salford’s fightback.

Having spent most Monday nights in recent years tearing defenders’ shortcomings to shreds, Carragher was predictably inundated with abuse from fans.

And it didn’t take long for Carragher to defend himself, as he left the blame at Given’s door in typically hilarious fashion.

Here’s what the former Republic of Ireland shot-stopper made of the error.
