Inter Milan manager fined £9,000 for offensive outburst at referee after Sassuolo defeat

Luciano Spalletti was not a happy man after a disappointing start to the season

Inter Milan manager Luciano Spalletti has been fined €10,000 - approximately £9,000 - by Serie A for his actions after Inter lost their opening game of the season. Inter had a busy summer during which they recruited well, signing players such as Stefan De Vrij and Lautaro Martinez, but they failed to get off to a winning start as they fell victim to Sassuolo in their first league game of the season, losing 1-0. Spalletti unleashed both barrels towards the referee during the game and the abusive language he used has landed him in hot water, with a hefty fine.

He confronted referee Maurizio Mariani and has been publicly warned by the league's governing body about his future conduct having used 'gravely offensive' language.

Elsewhere in Serie A, Cristiano Ronaldo won his first league game with Juventus against Chievo thanks to a late winner from Federico Bernadeschi. Ronaldo failed to score, with his most significant contribution coming when he injured the Chievo goalkeeper in a nasty clash, for which he apologised afterwards.
