Ilkay Gundogan briefly tried to steal Mesut Ozil’s life on Twitter

Imposter.

There are two sad truths in this world.

The first is that death is inevitable, the second is that a lot of professional athletes don’t run their own social media accounts.

As far as we’re concerned, those are the two big ones anyway.

Even if they’re not willing to admit it, everyone knows that Memphis Depay and his Manchester United teammates probably weren’t as excited to see The Revenant as they led us to believe with their incredibly personalised messages about the Leonardo DiCaprio Oscar bait film.

And even if you accept that if it was up to Mesut Ozil, he probably wouldn’t have tweeted a professionally taken photo of himself on the substitute’s bench during Arsenal’s preseason tour of America, you definitely weren’t expecting was to see Ilkay Gundogan do the same.

But the Manchester City newboy briefly sent a shiver of excitement through Arsenal fans’ spines after he tweeted about how thrilled he was to join the Gunners on their preseason tour, accompanied by a photo of his international temmate Ozil.

The tweet was obviously meant for the Arsenal player’s account, which using our Sherlock-esque powers of deduction we have concluded must be controlled by the same person who runs Gundogan’s account.

It was only up for a few minutes, but that was long enough for the sneaky Twitterati to get their screenshots in and make sure the simple slip up will never be forgotten.

The internet doesn’t forget.
